About a year ago, my brother-in-law, Dave, and I started talking about doing a joint art show. I don’t remember what exactly inspired the conversation, but I know he had been doing a lot of visual art during that time and it was the first I knew he was even more talented than I already knew. Many people think of writing when they think of Dave (check some out here), but he is also an upcycling genius, a self-taught handyman, an amazing cook and one of the kindest souls I’ve ever encountered.
Shortly after deciding to do a show with Dave, I had a solo show at the Joshua Wilton House and our friend Matt Carlson asked me afterward if I would ever consider a collaborative show. I told him about the show Dave and I were thinking about doing and we pulled him on board as well. Matt is another multi-talented guy, a student, a dad and husband to a lovely family, an electrician, an amazing volleyball player and most importantly for this show, a musician.
We came up with a somewhat outlandish idea to create a show that was also a game and allowed us to create art in our various mediums in an interesting way. Among the three of us, we came up with 8 obscure words. There are 3 definitions for each word and one is correct. Each art piece is a response to either a correct or false definition of the word. Your job as the viewer is to guess the correct definition, expressed through written word collage, audio compilations and mixed media sculptures. So come see our show and play our game on April 4th, 5-8pm at Spitzer Art Center.
In other news, a few months ago, I met Angela Carter, a local writer. Check out her work on her website; you will not be disappointed! Recently, she asked me to design a logo for her and this is what we came up with:
Until next time, when the flowers have finally bloomed…
